Maintain Your Independence

Getting older is not easy, but it does not have to mean that we lose our independence. Here are some simple tips to maintain our movement and strength:

  • Movement-based exercise – this can range from some stretches at home to activities such as Pilates, yoga or gym-based classes.
  • Strength – research shows we can still have significant gains in strength into our 90s. Performing some resistance exercises with some light weights, elastic bands or objects lying around the home can help.
  • General exercise – where possible exercise such as walking, swimming or cycling can be great to maintain your joint movement and muscle strength.

Health Checks

For those over 65 regular health checks are a great way to keep your mind at ease and your health on top form. It is common for blood pressure and cholesterol levels to need monitoring as you get older, but these can be easily managed with a healthy diet, exercise and in some cases medication.

Having regular hearing and eye tests is also recommended to ensure you’re getting the most from life, eye tests are free for those over 60.

Falls Prevention

One of the biggest fears as we get older in life is having a fall and the risk of injury and loss of confidence that comes with that. However, this does not have to be the case as there are many things we can do to reduce the risk.

  • Stay active – as we get older, our muscle strength and balance reduce, which can lead to a fall.
  • Have regular eye tests – this will detect any vision problems early before they cause you to lose your balance and coordination.
  • Eat well – getting enough energy from your food is important in keeping up strength and preventing falls.
  • Keep hydrated.
  • Choose the right shoes – make sure footwear is supportive and comfortable.
  • Support your bone health – keep your bones healthy and strong by eating calcium-rich foods, getting enough vitamin D from sunlight and doing some weight-bearing exercises.
