What Is It?
Whiplash is a relatively common, usually self-limiting condition, which typically affects the neck or back and can also cause pain in the arms and other areas. It is typically caused by rapid acceleration and deceleration of the head relative to the body which is most frequently seen in car or road traffic accidents. Pain is characterised typically around the neck and can last from a matter of several days to many months and in more severe cases it can last for several years.Â
Assessment and Treatment
Our clinicians are specifically trained in the treatment of whiplash and associated disorders. We undertake vital screening to ensure there is no serious pathology or injury which is very rare but if it does occur needs escalation in terms of ongoing management.Â
We ensure that patients are equipped with the right education and information to self-manage and undertake the right self-treatments for the condition. Treatments in clinic may include local manual therapy, including soft tissue and joint mobilisation, as well as progressive exercise prescription and ongoing support for any referred pain which may occur.
Many insurance companies now offer post-accident physiotherapy assessment and treatment where it’s appropriate. This ensures drivers have the best possible recovery and are not left with significant pain which impacts their home and work life.
