What Is It?
Knee pain and dysfunction is one of the most common problems we see at Pure Physiotherapy. The knee is a hinge joint where your shin bone (tibia) meets your thigh bone (femur). The knee joints bend and straighten and withstand considerable levels of force during weight-bearing activities of daily living (walking, stair climbing and running). Due to it being one of the most used parts of the body the knee can suffer from a wide range of conditions caused by anything from use in daily life to those caused by high intensity sports. Many of our physiotherapists have worked in elite sport as well as helping patients who are recreational runners, walkers or suffer with osteoarthritis or other chronic issues around the knee.
Assessment and Treatment
One of the first things that we need to do when anyone presents with a knee problem is to carry out a thorough assessment to ascertain the cause of the pain and dysfunction. Whilst the knee may look like a simple joint, the combination of ligaments, tendons nerves and blood vessels as well as the muscles that control the movement can make the diagnosis more challenging. Without an accurate diagnosis, targeted treatment can be difficult to achieve, therefore if you present with acute knee pain either through trauma or sudden onset or chronic problems which have not resolved over time it is recommended for you to see a specialist musculoskeletal physiotherapist and we can carry out that assessment and understand what the cause is. This will allow you to undergo targeted treatment rehabilitation advice and education so you can best manage your knee and return to the things you love to do.
