Assessment

When you first visit us, we will enquire about the history of your issue including asking about how the symptoms started, the location, what makes it better or worse, how has it impacted your typical function and what activities are important to you. We ask various questions to help ascertain what the issue may be, will also guide us on what may or may not need to be assessed physically. You will be asked about your medical history, any ongoing medical conditions which you may feel irrelevant but may be linked to your symptoms. Your physiotherapist will also need to know about what activities you perform on a typical day, what movements you regularly perform and if there have been any changes in these.

Examination

Your physiotherapist will usually perform a physical examination to establish what level of function you have. This may involve testing specific anatomical structures that could be contributing to your symptoms and may involve provoking pain which is a normal and commonly expected side effect of an assessment, especially when a painful/damaged structure has been isolated with some of the specialised tests we can perform. We recommend that you wear suitable clothing which allows you to move freely.

Treatment and Management

Upon completion of your assessment, you will be given an explanation as to the cause of your symptoms with a clear and understandable explanation of the problems and structures.

You may be given hands-on treatment to assist your recovery along with self-management advice and home exercises, empowering you with the skills and knowledge to effectively control and reduce your symptoms by implementing self-help strategies and work towards achieving full function.

Another key component of what we offer is a personalised home exercise plan which will take into consideration your pre-injury level of function, individual goals, daily tasks and physical activity requirements, facilities you have available and your hobbies and interests. A personalised and progressive home exercise plan will be provided to help optimise mobility and strengthen local tissue, ensuring the likelihood of further issues in the area is minimised.
