What Is a Balanced Diet?

A healthy and balanced diet contains food from the five food groups (fruit, vegetables, grains, protein and dairy) and meets your personal nutritional needs.

The average woman requires around 2,000 calories per day and the average male needs 2,500, though this varies from each person depending on factors such as genetics and activity levels.

A healthy diet is essential to maintain healthy joints, muscles and bones. Your diet is the fuel that allows the muscles to function, develop and repair. It also provides the building blocks for healthy bones, reducing the chance of age-related issues such as osteoporosis, fractures and rickets. Calcium in the diet is important for maintaining these bones and vitamin D helps allow the body to process the calcium.

Diet is also a way of managing a healthy weight and inflammation which can affect joint health, pain, and mobility.
